You can always determine a kitchen’s quality by looking at the kitchen cabinets. If you only know a little bit about them then you will know exactly what type of wood is used. You can differentiate between hard wood, soft wood, plywood, and veneers. The colors of the cabinets are all the shades of wood finishing. You decide on the color after you have chosen the wood and style of the cabinets. The styles of the cabinet door are very similar but also differ in style from one to another. You can get the cathedral arch, Roman arch; square raised, square flat or look at many other alternatives.

People commonly let their budget choose the cabinets they get. If you are fortunate enough to have the best wood you can have one of several types of hard wood like Maple, Hickory, Oak and Cherry. This would be the most in value because it is the strongest. Hard wood is famous not only for it’s great quality but also for it’s beauty. Having beautiful cabinets in your kitchen will also make your home more valuable.

Soft wood can also be a complement to the home with its beauty and also its smell. If you are wondering where this wood comes from well there is Cedar, Pine, and redwood. Just one step below hard wood this wood is also very strong and would last very long. Its durability is outstanding especially when compared to lesser qualities. If you are only a few hundred dollars away then it would be well worth the wait to be patient.

The cheapest of wood you can find on the market are MDF and plywood. MDF or Material Density Fiber is fake wood. It is the quickest to deteriorate. You would be lucky if it lasts you a year. This is because it quickly bloats when wet and once a screw comes out it will be hard to replace it with another one. For cheap kitchen cabinets plywood would be a better choice. It is more flexible and strong.

The choices of material are quite basic and the prices of kitchen cabinets all depend on the material. Choosing the design does not have any effect on the pricing so you can choose your favorite one. If you don’t like any designs you can have your cabinets flat.

If you are prepared to make a good investment then you will be looking at solid wood or hard wood and soft wood. If you are on a very minimal budget and you are desperate for a change then you can think about getting plywood.

Cheap Air Cleaners --5 Ways to Avoid Making Them Expensive Mistakes

Everybody wants the most bang for their buck these days, and so we are often asked about the cheapest air purifier. It can only be considered cheap if it does what you want it to, and you purchase it for a good price.

If, however, you purchase a purifier for any price, and it does not solve your problem, or solve it in a reasonable amount of time, then it is, in fact not cheap, but an expensive mistake. Opting for the 5 features below will help assure that the unit you bring home does not turn out to be an expensive mistake.

1. Decide how much square footage you need to clean by measuring your space. If your space is 15 feet by 15 feet, you need to clean 300 square feet. Be sure to look for a purifier that will effectively clean that amount of space or even slightly more.

2. Decide on what pollutants to want to remove. A purifier that is designed to remove pet odor might not be as effective in removing airborne chemicals. Read the technical specifications to make sure the cleaner you choose is a good match for you. Make sure the filter is able to remove the pollutants that you want to get rid of.

3. Check to make sure the unit you decide to purchase is made of steel rather than plastic. Those made of plastic generally cost less, but in return some give off fumes that are generated once the motor gets warm. This is called off-gassing.

If off-gassing occurs, not only will you have the pollutants that you were trying to get rid of initially, but your "cheap" purifier will actually add pollutants to your environment. You surely do not need to pay money for that.

4. Check to see that the manufacturer or retailer has a reasonable return policy. Trying the cleaner in your space is one of the best ways to see if you have the one that is best for the pollutants you need to remove, and the space you want to clean.

A reputable company will offer a 30 day return policy, and if the cleaner is effective will generally not charge a restocking fee because of its high success rate with consumers. If a company really believes in their product the return policy will be something they are proud of!

5. Make sure that the purifier you purchase has a really good warranty. Cheap air purifiers might offer a 30 day warranty. But if something goes wrong with the purifier after 30 days and you have no recourse, the air purifier was not cheaper, as you will need to buy another one if you want to clean your air.

Cleaners that will stand the test of time are often warranted for as much as 5 years! If you do the math--divide the price of the purifier by 1825 days (the number of days in 5 years), you will see that the cost per day really makes it a cheap.

Once you decide how much space you need to clean, the pollutants you need to remove, check for steel construction, the return policy, and the warranty, you can make the best decision about your purifier, and ultimately get the cheapest air purifier because it will do what you need it to do.

Creating An Open Feel In An Older Home

We recently renovated a house that was built in the 1950's. Most of the houses in that era are known as post war split levels or two story bi-levels. This house happen to be a split level and as almost all split levels from that time period, it had small to medium sized rooms that were neatly separated. The house worked well for the time period, the family of that era had ample space to live and play; at the same time each room was large enough to provide space for all household activities, but many of these houses lacked a definitive style. While this layout may have worked back in the 50's, it is not highly desirable in today's market and needed to be updated.

The reason that open floor plans have become so popular is because of the way it creates the feeling of larger spaces, which is especially important in smaller homes. When dealing with post World War Two houses and houses all the way up into the 1980's you are most likely dealing with a boxed in type of house. Boxed in meaning, if you look at an overhead view of the structure, you will see 4 walled boxes making up the layout of the house. In the house we were renovating, we wanted to get away from this look and give the house that modern feel. An open floor plan does just that, it literally "opens" walls or enlarges door ways to the point where the wall is gone.

When removing walls to create more visible space you must consider a few things, first is the wall load bearing? This is the most important thing to remember because a load bearing wall is carrying the weight of the structure and floors above. Or in other terms these walls have beams inside of the wall (made from two by fours or two by sixes) that support the main structure of the house. A house is built and there are certain walls or more specifically certain beams of wood that are strategically placed, these walls carry the majority of the weight of the house. Load bearing walls can still be removed, but it will take some structural engineering and adding additional strength to the current beams that are in place. These beams can be dressed up and appear as decorative post or anything you can think of to fit your design. But just remember, load bearing walls can be opened up and still part of your floor plan, you will just need to keep some of the beams that hold up your structure.

The other issues with removing walls deals with what lies inside of the walls. Electrical lines, plumbing lines, and heating pipes are the big issues, along with duct work for forced air, these things are common in walls, but should only slow you down and not stop your project. All of these things can be re-routed, but it will add time to your job and possibly more money. Go into your basement or crawl space, right below where the wall (that your removing is located), in this spot you can see what type of lines are running "up through" the walls. From this you can determine a course of action. You will know what is in the wall and what has to be done with it.

After you have done these things, you next step is to start removing partitions. Ultimately the easiest walls will have nothing inside of them, but do not get discouraged if you run into some issues inside of the wall. These things can be changed and in the end it will be worth it when you house has an open floor plan. By creating an open floor plan, you will ultimately be modernizing your home, which will add value when you decide to sell (and make it more livable while you are still there).

* If you have a small room, avoid a large blade for the fan. This would dispel a cluttered look. You can incorporate more blades to increase air movement at lower speeds which again means less noise.

It is important that you have at least five or six inches between the ceiling and the blades as it would increase the airflow. Some of the fans come with a brass finish which looks good initially. Be careful with the brass finish, as cheap or imitation brass can tarnish. Also make sure the brass on the fan is the same color as the brass on the light kit.

In this case, buy a ceiling fan from a reputed company and don't get carried away by assurances of lifetime warranty. They may be applicable for the motor only.

In this day and age, we all know sustainability is important, and finding a 'sustainable' garage door is the responsible thing to do. But in coastal and other high-velocity-wind areas, that takes on a whole new meaning- a garage door can literally save your home during a hurricane or intense storm.

Garage doors are unusually susceptible to wind damage than most other openings on the exterior of a home- this is due to sheer surface area. Two-car garage doors are at even higher risk. Unless you pay for the tested, approved reinforced doors, very high winds can easily pop it out of the garage opening, splaying open your home and making it easy for the wind to damage other parts.

This can lead to a chain reaction of internal pressure, blowing out the roof, supporting walls, or other windows in your home. If you're thinking to yourself "that's not really possible" think about Hurricane Andrew in 1992. With 150-mph winds, Andrew destroyed more than 130,000 homes, leaving hundreds of thousands homeless. And according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the failure of garage doors directly contributed to the damage of homes and buildings. And international building code has been instituted in the meantime, requiring that at-risk homes have additional bracing on their garage doors, in addition to heavier gauge tracking and other kinds of hardware designed to keep everything in place in the face of hurricane-force winds.

These newer, more exacting building rules were sorely tested in 2004 and 2005, two unusual, record-breaking hurricane seasons. And they will continue to be tested, as global warming adds to the severity of each new hurricane season. It has been proven so far that homes that comply with the codes are better able to bear the load of back-to-back storms, and that homes that didn't obey the codes (or hadn't been remodeled since their institution) took much more damage. IN many cases, the garage doors were blown out completely.

It may not seem to make sense, since reinforced doors use more parts and often environmentally unsound materials to secure a home, but in the end, it is more environmentally responsible, sustainable, and cost-effective to invest a little extra money in securing an at-risk home beforehand. Otherwise, you're left having to rebuild after a total loss, wasting time, money, and resources. If you live in a place that sees frequent storms or is within hurricane range, you should consider replacing your old garage door to protect your home and ensure your safety.
