Tips to Make Your Move Easier
According to the US Census Bureau, the average person in the United States will move 11.7 times in their lifetime. Whether you're a Northern Virginia/South Carolina buyer or seller, eventually, you will have to move. This can be a very stressful time. However, with a little preparation and organization, it doesn't have to be difficult. Here are a few tips to make your move easier:
Take Your Time - This is why it's important to start packing early. Instead of getting overwhelmed by thinking about packing up the contents of your entire household, tackle one room at a time. You can start with the seasonal decorations, dishes or linens that have been stored away.
Donation or Trash - I have found that moving provides the perfect opportunity to clean out unused items and clothing. If you find something while packing up your Northern Virginia/South Carolina home that you haven't used or worn in the last year (except heirlooms or seasonal items), get rid of it. Those items that are in good shape can be donated while the mismatched shoes or torn clothes can be trashed. Remember that donations to thrift stores like the Salvation Army and Goodwill are tax deductible. So, make sure to get a receipt and keep it in a safe place for next year's taxes.
Limit the Pounds - A good rule of thumb for packing boxes is to keep them around 30 lbs, but no more than 50 lbs. Anything heavier can be too hard to lift, may break the seams on the box or could cause injuries.
Open Me First Box(es) - Just as the name implies, set aside one or two boxes for your "Open Me First" box(es). Put instant coffee, plastic flatware, paper plates, plastic cups, napkins, a couple rolls of toilet paper, shampoo, soap, toothpaste, bandaids, a basic first aid kit and any necessary medicines inside. Mark the outside clearly on all sides with "Open Me First" so you know which box this is. It may be a couple of days before you are completely unpacked. Making these necessities readily available can help you get through the move more comfortably.
Packing the Bits and Pieces - When you take apart a bed, table or anything else with small nuts, bolts and screws, put the bits and pieces in a sealable bag, write which item it goes to in marker on the outside of the bag and tape it to one of the larger pieces they belong to. This way, when you need to put them together in your new Northern Virginia/South Carolina property, you'll know exactly where the items are and won't have to go searching for them or lose pieces in the move.
Pillows, Blankets and Towels - These make perfect padding for fragile items, including crystal, china, glass cups, plates and coffee mugs.
Taping Boxes - Taping along the seam isn't enough. To make the boxes stronger, add a couple extra strips of tape criss-crossed over the seam.
Pack a Suitcase - Probably the most efficient way to make sure everyone is comfortable enough to get through the move, pack a suitcase that contains enough necessities for at least three days for each family member (including regular clothing, bed clothes, toiletries, glasses, etc). Keep this suitcase completely separate from the rest of the boxes being moved, like in your car or even your workplace.
Following these tips will help make your move easier. Keep me in mind when you need help with your Northern Virginia, South Carolina, Washington DC or Maryland real estate.
