About Air Purifiers

Air purifiers are also regularly required by commercial properties as most of the times office units or commercial premises are all enclosed and air conditioned. In such cases it is advisable to have an air neutraliser as not only does it remove stale air but also removes odours, pollutants, bacteria and some air purifiers also have an in built feature for aromatherapy which releases a subtle aroma into the air.

Air purifiers are manufactured to be stand alone units and can also be custom built in such a way that they blend into the décor and structure, thus being invisible to the eyes from a distance. Larger units can be attached to an air handler unit (AHU) or to an HVAC unit which is generally found in industrial, medical or commercial industries.

Uses of Air Purifiers

• Air purifiers are extremely beneficial for the following reasons:
• Removing bacteria from the air
• Reducing allergies
• Removing smoke and its smell thus reducing effects of passive smoking
• Removing odours and unpleasant smells
• Reducing stale air
• Releasing a fresh and clean smell in the air

Air Purifying Techniques

Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation

UVGI is used to sterilise the air when it passes through the UV lamps. UV lamps use ultra violet rays to destroy the bacteria and pollutants in the air when the air if forced through it by way of fans. There are other systems too that are installed in order to force the air to pass by the UV lamps to get rid of micro organisms.

Filters

Filters are traps that stop the airborne particles depending upon their size. In this system the air is forced through the filters after which the particles are physically captured.

HEPA filters remove almost 99.97% of 0.3 micrometer particles and are generally more effective on particles larger or slightly smaller. This system is ineffective for particles lower than 0.01 micrometer. A good option is to attach a prefilter through which the air can pass through first which can then catch most of the large particles and this can be cleaned out more easily instead of the air purifier. HEPA filters don t generate any harmful byproducts or ozone or clean the air.

Activated Carbon

Activated carbon is a porous material that absorbs volatile chemicals on a molecular basis, but this does not remove larger particles. The absorption process when using activated carbon must reach equilibrium so that it can completely remove the contaminants. This system works as activated carbon converts the contaminants rom a gaseous stage to a solid phase which is then easier to block. Activated carbon can be used at room temperature and so is a popular choice in commercial properties. It is generally uses along with another filter technology especially like HEPA.

Ozone

Ozone generators are a popular choice today for air filtration. These units are designed to produce a large amount of ozone, which is a strong oxidant and this gas can oxidise many other chemicals. It is said that the only safe use of ozone generators is in unoccupied rooms using shock treatment for the ollutants. These find popular use with restoration companies that use ozone generators to remove smell of smoke after fire damage, stench caused by decaying flesh which cannot be removed with anything other than ozone, not even bleach. Musty and toxic mold after flooding is also removed with ozone purifiers. It is unhealthy to breathe ozone and so you must be very careful when buying ozone air purifiers.

These are just a few popular methods of air filtration but there are many more like ioniser purifier, photo catalytic Oxidation and Liquid Ioniser Purifier.
