Drink Clean Water!

There are a number of different water purifiers that will achive different goals. It is worthwhile, therefore, to ensure you have researched exactly what you require to be purified before installing a new system.

If you think your water is unclean, first contact your local water department. They have a legal responsibility to ensure the water you are drinking is safe. So if you think there's something wrong with your water, give them a call and get them to come and visit and test the water. They will more than likely be grateful if you have discovered there is perhaps a leak in their mains that is letting in contaminants.

If they say the water is safe, next up you need to find out what exactly is wrong with your water. It may just be that the water you are supplied with has a peculiar taste or smell but there's nothing much wrong with it, or it could be that there are contaminants that require a specific purifying system. The one way to do it is to have a professional do a chemical analysis. This will cost you money but it will ensure you fix what needs fixing. It'll be more expensive to install a system and then find out you got the wrong one.

So when you have the report, you can then decide on what is the best solution. It could be that you have hard water. This means that you have certain chemicals, such as calcium and magnesium that make the water hard. If this is the case, there are devices that will soften the water. This will result in not only better drinking water, but your clothes will be softer, and your fixtures will not deteriorate so quickly. Also be aware that there are devices you can buy that are portable so you can take them with you if you move house.

The most common method of water purification is using the carbon filtration technique. These will filter asbestos, pesticides, mercury, etc.You can attach it using a portable filter on your tap, attach it beneath the sink or on a separate spigot mount. If you choose to use this method, do remember that you have to replace the filter, so check with the supplier that replacements will be easily purchased in the future. You will also find that silver-carbon filters reduce the possibility of bacterial build-up if the unit is not being used for some time. However, these are more expensive.

More costly practices utilize ultra-violet light or 'reverse osmosis'. They use ultra-violet light or membrane filters to treat and condition water from your tap. There are now also more efficient steam distillers. These boil the water, condense the vapor and leave most contaminants behind. They are becoming more efficient than in the past and can be as small as a kettle. Electricity is used, so make sure the usage cost fits within your budget.
