Keep Your Kids Safe In The Pool This Summer

There is nothing more fun in the summertime for most kids than going swimming. If you have kids and a pool at home, you might know how hard it is to keep them out of the water. If you do not have a pool in your own backyard, they might pester you to take them to a local pool or swimming hole. It is a great way to spend time together, but you also want to make sure that is done in a safe manner so it will not end up in tragedy.

If you have a pool at home, there are safety precautions you must follow in order to protect your children. When you have small children, it is recommended that you have a gate around the pool so that toddlers and even kids that might wander into your yard to not fall in and drown. This is one accident that happens far too often when a locked gate and fence could have prevented it. Kids are naturally attracted to the water when they love it and it only takes one slip to fall in over their heads.

Even when you are in attendance, and you always should be when children are in a pool, accidents can still happen. Never allow your kids to run and partake in horseplay around the sides of the pool. Many a concussion or broken bones have happened in this way. Let them know what the rules of the pool are and enforce them stringently.

Children just learning to swim should always wear a life preserver even if they had rather not. Even big kids that know how to swim well could become strangled and go under the water. This is why it is so imperative that an adult always be in attendance. If you allow your kids to swim in a pool or any where else, make sure you know CPR so you do not have to wait on help to arrive should they get hurt in any way.

Out of the water, kids should always have sunblock on to protect them from the sun. Be smart enough to know when a child has had enough sun for one day. Skin cancer can show up years later and sometimes it is deadly. Be a responsible parent when it comes to the fun your kids have outdoors especially when they are playing in the water.
