Be Sure Your Fireplace And Chimney Has Been Cleaned And Inspected Before You Use It

Keeping your fireplace from causing damages to your home will mean that you must have it cleaned and checked once every year. Keeping the interior of the fireplace box itself cleaned out is rather easy. You can use a broom and dustpan to keep down the build up of soot and ash. When you go to do this make sure that the ashes are completely cold and no little spark is still under this mound. When you are sure this ash is cold, put it in a metal bucket so that you can remove it safely from the home.

When you are done with the fireplace for the season, you will need to find a professional chimney sweep to come and do a through cleaning. You could wait the many months until you are ready to use it again, but cleaning it as soon as you are through using it can reduce the smoke smell that might carry through the summer. However, having it cleaned and inspected now will not mean that damage can not happen over the summer months and you could still need to have it inspected again before you use it in the fall. Animals could build a nest in it or storms could cause exterior leaks or other damage.

Water can cause damage by deteriorating the cement on the top of the chimney and the cement between the brick or rock. There is normally flashing installed under the shingles around the chimney where it meets the roof and if these shingles become loose or missing, water can sometimes begin to seep in. When this happens you can get water damage to the home interior and can have a musty smell where mold might have set in.

When a fireplace has a flue that does not work properly, it can allow more smoke to get into the inside of the home than would be normal. Smoke can damage your home too over time. It will leave a sooty residue on your furnishings, walls, ceilings, and floors. It will also make your home smell bad as long as this sticky residue is present. Sometimes a thorough cleaning will have to be done in the home to remove the smoke residue and smell.

Most importantly, a damaged fireplace can cause a house fire. You could have a chimney fire when creosote build up is present and if the chimney has cracks, the fire could reach flammable places that is was never supposed to touch. This is why cleaning and maintenance is so important before you use your fireplace each year.
