Home Improvement Resolutions for 2009
With home renovation projects, the excuses are always easy: not having enough time, having help (from friends), or having enough money... these things usually work fine as legitimate excuses. This year the excuses ran out. I had enough time, because of a lay off at work, I had some extra money (that was actually budgeted for a house project) and I had a friend who was also out of work and willing to help. So I took on the challenge of renovating the bathroom first and then thought if I had enough energy, I would go for the kitchen as well.
As always, I go online and search for the best possible deals on any supplies I need. First, I was looking for paint and really did not come across any great deals. I decided to go the local hardware store and settled for a paint selection from there. (It's good to buy from local stores since it stimulates your local economy and it is better than buying from a big box retail store, like Home Depot. These big box stores care very little for the small customer and are already making millions of dollars, so remember to go small and local when buying your supplies).
Next I picked up some tile from a local newspaper add, it worked out perfect and the tiles were about half the price of a retail tile store. (I tried to buy these tiles online, but the shipping was too much money). The final thing I needed was a bathroom vanity, linen closet, and mirror. This is when my online shopping paid off. I found RTA bathroom vanities online. RTA was/is not a brand name but a style of cabinets that are "ready to assemble", hence the "RT".
These bathroom products were actually better than what I saw in a retail store (solid wood fronts and paneled wood sides.. NO particle board) and they cost about 30% (thirty percent) less! I was shocked, because I was getting a better quality cabinet at less of a cost. The RTA bathroom vanities, RTA linen closet, and other products were fabulous. I never dreamed I could save money and still get a great looking bathroom. I saved so much money I decided to add an RTA tank topper. That is the little closet that goes above the toilet. (Store your tissue and toilet paper in there).
Unfortunately, I did not get to the kitchen, but I found a great resource in the RTA products. Meaning that there are also RTA kitchen cabinets and because I have a large kitchen (about 20 cabinets needed), I added it up and I will save $4,500 by using RTA kitchen cabinets, instead of regular store bought assembled cabinets.
In the end, I accomplished about half of my resolution, but in doing so, I discovered RTA kitchen cabinets and RTA bathroom vanities, so I ended up saving thousands of dollars and getting something accomplished around my house.
