If you are a homeowner going through a massive summer heat wave, you may be wondering just how to keep your home cool in the face of the high temperatures. You have bought fans, packs of ice, and opened up all of the windows in trying to keep cool. But, did you know that you may be leaving your home vulnerable to something potentially worse than heat? That is right. You may be leaving your home vulnerable to damage from that of mold. Mold thrives in hot and wet environments and the growth becomes even more apparent when air makes contact with the mold. Here are some of the causes of mold in your home during the heat wave and how you can rid your home of it.

That ice you bought to put in front of the fan may be cool and refreshing, but what you may not realize is that you are actually letting water droplets go flying across your home, and those water droplets may land on your carpet, or your couch, or you mattress, and this will lead to minor, but annoying, mold that you will have to clean up. A better solution is to skip the ice and just use the fan. This will prevent moisture from gathering in places where mold is almost certain to grow.

The next thing that can cause mold in your home comes from humidity. Humidity is, obviously, the combination of moisture and heat in the air. During a heat wave, humidity builds up greatly and humidity buildup can lead to condensation. That condensation can lead to mold. A good way to prevent mold caused by humidity is to put in a dehumidifier or to have some air circulated into the room. However, too much air can cause some of the condensation to attract more mold, so be sure that the humidity in the room is not too high before you let the air in.

Another cause of mold in your home in the middle of a heat wave is water that is already in your home. There are places in your home, especially in the bathroom, where there is water builds up more easily. In the bathroom condensation can build up from the steam that is emitted whenever you take a shower and this moisture can hide in places like the cracks in your baseboards. The heat can cause this moisture to build up mold. Remedy this problem in the bathroom by always running an exhaust fan while bathing with hot water. If you do not have an exhaust fan in the bathroom, at least open a window so the room can dry out each time.
