Is There Really A Difference Between Mold And Mildew
Moist, wet, and damp places that are warm enough to be conducive to their growth is where they are usually found. They both need a food source to survive. They can find food in things like paper, fabrics, sheet rock, or wood. These are places where they both can be found commonly. The question is how do you tell the difference and do you treat them both the same way?
Both of these types of fungi grow from spores. Mold can be a variety of colors like black, green, blue, or even reddish in color. Mildew is normally a gray or white color. Mildew will grow on paper and fabric and can normally the stain can not be removed. Mildew will also form on flowers like roses or other plants. Two types of mildew is downy or powdery. The downy mildew might also be found on some produce like grapes or potatoes.
Mold can also grow on foods as well as paper and fabric. While mold can grow in a bathroom area, mildew is just as common. Mold as everyone knows, is not always bad since one of our greatest discoveries was how to make penicillin out of it. That does not mean you want it in your bathroom.
Both types of fungi can be killed using bleach or some other mold and mildew killing product. Usually you will need to use these products in a well ventilated area when you do the cleaning. If your bathroom or kitchen gets mold or mildew often and continues to return, you should check into getting more ventilation in the rooms to help prevent it in the first place.
You might already have exhaust fans in your bathrooms, but if they are not large enough to pull out the moisture fast enough, this could still lead to getting mold on surfaces in the room. If you have one, you can try opening a window for a few minutes in addition to the exhaust fan. This might be difficult during the winter months, so replacing the fan you have might be for the best.
